Telangana strike enters Day 17, power generation, public transport hit badly

The ongoing stir over separate statehood issue continued to intensify in the Telangana region as the general strike called by Joint Action Committee(JAC) entered its 17th day on Thursday.

The strike, which started on September 13, has paralysed public transport and power production in the region. To add to people's woes, newspaper hawkers and vendors have also joined the agitation.

With the protests turning violent, the agitation has hit businesses hard. Industries have been suffering with reports putting per day losses at over Rs 100 crore.

On Wednesday, clashes broke out in Hyderabad and other parts of the region as protestors blocked roads on the JAC's call for shutdown and road blockade.

Meanwhile, 32 Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLAs from the region resigned from Andhra Pradesh Assembly in support of their demand for a separate state.

The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) has asked for an immediate intervention by the Centre. Party president K. Chandrasekhar Rao said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson president Sonia Gandhi must resolve the issue otherwise it would spiral out of control.
