Telangana: Protesters gherao Ministers in Hyderabad


The protests for a separate statehood Telangana were intensified on the 17th day of the "people's strike" as several pro-Telangana activists were arrested for trying to gherao the houses of ruling Congress ministers and MLAs in Hyderabad.

The Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) demanded the resignatins of the Congress ministers and MLAs. The protesters were shouting slogans of "Jai Telangana". Even the leaders of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also joined the protest and gheraoed the houses of the legislators.

Several pro-Telangana lawyers were also arrested for trying to gherao the house of Labour Minister D Nagender in Hyderabad. They shouted slogans and beat drums terming the minister a traitor.

The protesters also tried to gherao the residence of Qutbullahpur MLA Srisailam Goud on the outskirts of Hyderabad. The normal life in the city was affected due to ongoing strike.

Even government employees also supported the agitation. Around 400,000 employees including Teachers, lawyers, and doctors joined the strike. The strike also affected the transport system in the city. Over 10,000 buses of Road Transport Corporation (RTC) were off the roads on Thursday.

Hawkers also joined the strike and stopped delivering newspapers on Thursday declaring the protests as a part of the 'Sakala Januma Samme'.
